Self Esteem ... or Self Steam?
Girls will be girls, I suppose. And it probably goes for boys as well, albeit in a different way.
But the other day one of my daughters decided she wanted to change her appearance in a way that did not meet with my approval.
Put out by my opposition, she bit her tongue overnight - which is quite a feat in itself - but came out the next morning all sugar-coated guns firing.
"It will build my self-esteem."
"It will make me a hit in The Group.'
"You'll be seen as a cool parent ..." (that one nearly connected.)
All a lot of bollocks, actually. Invented for the occasion. Yes, I'll give her marks for creativity, trying a different approach, and delivery.
But I was not swayed.
"Self-esteem, eh?" I said. And trotted out a CD and a book on just that topic.
The look she gave was not exactly encouraging. And I notice the items are still where I put them.
Self-esteem comes from within. I wonder how long the message will take to filter through...
